Book Review

A book review is perhaps the last thing that you would expect to find on a website dedicated to a vacation and retirement destination in Englewood Florida.

There are a many reasons why we have chosen to review books on line.

First of all reading and also writing books are a passion of mine.

My wife and I enjoy sitting on the warm sandy Englewood beaches relaxing. There is just something special about reading a book while the warm gulf breezes waft ashore and sun shines on the glistening water and makes the sandy beaches seem to sparkle.

What kind of books do we read? For Judy it is usually a good historical novel or anything about travel and nature. I, on the other hand prefer non-fiction, either historical or biographical. I really enjoy books that have a sports theme. But, because my golf game is always in need of repair. I also like to read books about improving my golf game.

Now back to our reason for a book review page, or pages.

As I mentioned earlier, I write books, usually with a historical or a sports theme. And, most likely it will be biographical in nature.

Also, because I love to read, I am always on the hunt for a good book. So, when I find one I will write a review to let you know about the book. Perhaps it will be about a topic that interests you.

The first book review that you will appear on enjoy-englewood-florida.com will be of a book that I have just recently written. The second will be a book about improving your golf game and as my golf buddies will tell you this is probably a book that I should read and re-read a few times. I am sure that it will not be long before Judy contributes a book about birding or travel.

We hope to post many book reviews to help you find the right book to enjoy while soaking up the sun on the Englewood beaches or anywhere for that matter. If you have read a book that you enjoyed and would like to share with our readers you can submit a book review to us to post.

To review books online provides us all with the opportunity to share our passion for the type of books that we like to read.

Shooting For The Moon: The Bill Beagan Story

This is the first book I have reviewed. This book is about a young man whose successful career had the most unique and unlikely beginnings.

This book will be of particular interest to those of you who are graduates of colleges that constituted the CCHA. It was Commissioner Bill Beagan who turned the CCHA into a collegiate powerhouse in the late 1980's and 1990's.

But, the interest level in this book goes far beyond the CCHA. Sports historians will be interested in reading how Bill Beagan turned the International Hockey League into a respectable minor professional hockey league.

Hockey fans will enjoy reading about some of the most powerful men in the world of hockey. Beagan regularly consulted and socialized with men like NHL President Clarence Campbell, NHL President John Ziegler Jr., Bruce Norris, the owner of the Detroit Red Wings, Bill Wirtz the owner of the Chicago Black Hawks, Bobby Orr the greatest defenseman and perhaps the greatest hockey player of all time and of course Harold Ballard the flamboyant owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Bill Beagan was the eleventh of thirteen children raised in a small northern town. He dropped out of school at the age of 16 to join the army. There is really nothing unusual about his beginnings but what followed his military career is an amazing story of success in the most unlikely career path.

First Beagan worked as an NHL referee. But after only one season as on-ice official he was selected to be the Commissioner of the International Hockey League. The pinnacle of his career came when he was named the Commissioner of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

Shooting for the Moon: The Bill Beagan Story details how this high school dropout became the top executive of the CCHA, a hockey league that represented such famous institutions of higher learning such as Notre Dame, the University of Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State and Bowling Green.

This books captivating story is 176 pages of pictures, appendixes, index and quotes by several famous hockey personalities.
