Collecting Seashells on Englewood Beaches

Collecting seashells is one of the most popular things that our grandchildren want to do when they come for a visit. Whether the sun is shining or a gentle rain is falling searching for unique and beautiful seashells along the beach is a great way to pass a few hours.

But I have to make a confession. Seashell collecting is not just something that we do when the grandchildren are here. Both my wife and I love to search for that “perfectly unique” shell. We walk every day for exercise and more often than not we like to find any excuse to go for a walk on the beach. So while we get our exercise we also indulge ourselves in a little fun by hunting for seashells.

The Englewood beaches abound with fascinating shells of many different shapes, colors, and color patterns. It was not until recently that I discovered that there are shells that are unique to our beaches. I have listed them below:

  • Left Handed Whelks
  • Auger Shells
  • Coquina Shells
  • Rough Scallop
  • Fighting Conch

But again, I only recently discovered just how special are these dark beauties. I learned that some of them may be as old as one million years. Wow! If only our teeth would last so long!

If you enjoy collecting seashells and want to learn more about this hobby there are groups that you can join such as the Englewood Shell Club.

Whether you want to become an avid collector of seashells and sharks teeth or just pick up the occasional “special” shell, the beaches of Englewood provide an ample hunting ground for collecting seashells and sharks teeth.
